The evolution of flute

I picked the flute. The flute is among the oldest known instruments. It evolved from Paleolithic bones pipes in a complex metal

Here is a video on the flute you will enjoy.

“While the term “flute” refers to a broad number of instruments which are found in many different cultures, we will be exploring the history of our modern flute. There are many names for this special kind of flute. These names include: cross flute, German flute, transverse flute and flautotraverso. What is important about all of these names is that they define an instrument that is held horizontally while being played. A flute dating back to approximately 900 B.C. was found in China and called a ch’ie. To date, the oldest flutes have been found in the Swabian Alps region of Germany, and are said to have been from about 43,000 to 35,000 years ago.” From https://banddirector.com/woodwinds/flutes-piccolos/flute-history/  “Historically, flutes were most commonly made of reed, bamboo, wood, or other organic materials. They were also made of glass, bone, and nephrite. Most modern flutes are made of metal, primarily silver and nickel. Silver is less common than silver alloys. Other materials used for flutes include gold, platinum, grenadillaand copper.” From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flute

Here are the eras of the flute:

Paleolithic Era 50,000 years ago: Earliest flutes were created from animal bones such as bear, deer, and mammoth.

Ancient Civilization: Bone and bamboo flutes appeared in china. By the 16th century BC it was featured more sophisticated designs the panpipes were also popular.

Medieval and Renaissance: 5th thru 17th century: one piece wooden pipes were used in Europe for military purpose. The transverse flute began appearing in European courts.

Baroque period 1670s thru 1700s: Jean Hottetrre resigned the flute into 3 pieces: head, body, and foot joint. It was introduced as a conical bore.

The Boehm Revolution 1800s: Theobald Boehm revolutionized the instruments by introducing larger tiny holes, a system of rods and keys for easier fingering and a cylindrical metal body resulting in a louder more consistent sound.

Modern Era 1900s to present: 1960s Albert Cooper redesigned the flute scale into 440 hertz established the standard for modern professional instruments.

  1. It was interesting to read what you had to say about the flute. The flute is an instrument I have always enjoyed hearing but I have never known much about it. I had no idea that flutes had existed since 900 B.C. I also think that it is amazing that people back then were able to carve out of animal bones to make flutes. I also didn't know that there were different names for flutes. Do you play the flute at all or did you do the evolution because you like listening to it?
